There’s still (unfortunately) some way to go before same sex weddings become mainstream. Here in Thailand, where there’s a general acceptance of many different lifestyle choices, the wedding industry is thoroughly used to same sex ceremonies. This goes for Samui too, where there are a LOT of same sex weddings held every year. It’s safe to say that everyone here who works in the industry is used to same sex ceremonies.
This makes it a lot easier when looking for any service provider, whether it be planner, cake maker, florist or of course photographer. We at Akaphon Photography are also used to welcoming same sex couples and taking into account all their wishes and needs.
Over the last years, we’ve had the chance to be photographers at quite a few same sex weddings. The procedures we use are generally the same as for all weddings; we first discuss your desires and then make them come true. There are some differences though. For example, some couples may want their ceremony to be particularly private, even secret. We’re able to provide whatever level of intimacy you need, whether you want to be totally away from the public, or living it up with all your friends and family. We’re equally at home in both these scenarios.
With traditional wedding photography, the focus has all been upon a man, usually in a suit, and a woman, usually in a white dress. Contemporary same sex photography ranges over a larger number of differences. All of this calls for new approaches, more openness and a lot more creativity. The startling backgrounds alone call for photography that’s fresh and vibrant – and then the couple themselves need to stand out, rather than be lost in the amazing backdrops.
We feel extremely lucky to work in a field where we see many different types of celebrations of love, all of which are both beautiful and unique. We’ve showcased for you some of our couples, so you can see what same sex wedding photography looks like.
